North East businessman, Nigel Devine, has generously sponsored the world premiere of award-winning filmmaker Lorna Tucker’s latest documentary, “Someone’s Daughter, Someone’s Son,” which will be shown at Tyneside Cinema on February 8th. As the owner of North Tyneside-based company Orbis Support, Nigel was also involved in a Kickstarter campaign to fund the film’s release in cinemas across the United Kingdom. Nigel expressed his strong support for the film, saying, “Despite the bleak subject matter, to me, this is predominantly a film about hope.” He further noted how incredible it is that the film’s main protagonists have managed to rise above their terrible experiences, even despite the system, ultimately inspiring others to get their lives back on track. Matt Hird, head of distribution at Dartmouth Films, expressed his gratitude to Nigel and Orbis Support, citing their sponsorship as instrumental in amplifying the film’s message and impact throughout the UK, and in the campaign to end homelessness altogether.
Directed by the brilliant Lorna Tucker, “Someone’s Daughter, Someone’s Son” explores how the United Kingdom can bring an end to homelessness and has garnered support from communities throughout the country. The film is based on Lorna’s own experiences, having become homeless at 14 years old and spending two years on the streets, where she slept under Waterloo Bridge and was in and out of sheltered accommodation. The film also features survivors of homelessness like Earl John Charlton, based in North Shields. Charlton spent 25 years on and off the streets, beginning at 14 years old, after experiencing violence at home. Despite his challenging start in life, Charlton turned his fortunes around and launched a groundbreaking initiative for homeless individuals in the north-east.
Nigel and Orbis Support’s contribution will facilitate the film’s release in communities and networks across the UK, greatly enhancing its reach and impact. This documentary addresses a critical issue that requires the attention and action of all citizens, and we commend Nigel and Orbis Support for their continued support in helping us to end homelessness for good.
