Stockport has unveiled its first electric vehicle (EV) charging hub as part of a £15 million initiative aimed at transforming EV transport infrastructure. The hub, located near the Romiley Precinct shopping centre, boasts four charging bays, including two ultra-rapid, one rapid and one fast. The ultra-rapid chargers, described as “cutting-edge”, can add roughly 125 miles of range following just a 15-minute stop. Stockport Council and Be.EV are behind the initiative, with the partnership expected to deliver 20 EV charging installations across Stockport in the coming months. Devices will be available to all EV users, with Be.EV members being able to enjoy discounted rates. Notably, local residents will benefit with Stockport Council receiving a share of the charge points revenue.
The Romiley charging hub, just 10 minutes’ drive from the M60 and suitable for up to 2700 registered electric vehicles, marks Stockport’s entry into Greater Manchester’s largest public EV charging network, helping to connect regions across the UK. Reliable and convenient charging for EV drivers whilst they shop locally is a key part of Stockport’s strategy to boost the local economy.
Cllr Mark Roberts, Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Environment, notes the “challenging journey” of reducing emissions but is hopeful that this infrastructure will play a vital role in achieving those targets.
Be.EV, who welcomed local executives, councillors and interested parties to the Romiley site launch ceremony, gave away nearly £800 in free charging to mark the event. The new initiative is set to drive profound changes in EV infrastructure across Stockport and transform people’s attitudes along the way.
