Over 100 individuals are currently engaged in the construction of Derby’s new £45.8m entertainment and conference venue, as the auditorium begins to unveil its size and magnitude. Situated on the site of the former Pink Coconut nightclub and other structures, the new Becketwell venue offers a significantly larger and more versatile space than any previously available in the city center. Three-quarters of the glass curtain walling on the east side has been installed, providing a glimpse of the impressive scale of the auditorium. Internal work progresses smoothly, offering a preview of the spatial layout within the auditorium.
Councillor Nadine Peatfield, Leader of Derby City Council and Portfolio Holder for City Centre, Regeneration, Culture, and Tourism, expressed excitement at the progress, stating, “It’s fantastic that we’re now getting a real idea of the impressive scale of the auditorium and a feel of what it will be like when the building opens.” She emphasized the venue’s significance in enriching Derby as a cultural hub, highlighting its role as a space for learning, creativity, and diverse events.
Main contractors, Heage-based Bowmer + Kirkland, have been overseeing construction since June 2023, and significant milestones such as the completion of the steel frame and concrete tiers for seating have already been achieved. The project is progressing according to schedule, with practical completion and handover expected in the first quarter of 2025. Mechanical and electrical systems, crucial components of the building, are advancing well, while the cladding on exterior walls nears completion, showcasing the venue’s striking architectural design.
With the venue set to host over 200 cultural and commercial events annually, it is anticipated to draw an additional 250,000 visitors to the city and create over 200 local job opportunities. The ownership of the venue will rest with Derby City Council, leased to and operated by ASM Global, a renowned venue management and live experiences producer. The venue forms the second phase of the £200m Becketwell regeneration scheme, with future phases potentially including a hotel and purpose-built student residential spaces.
The Becketwell scheme, overseen by St James Securities, a Leeds-based property developer, represents the culmination of discussions initiated five years ago to revitalise the derelict city center site. Development Director at St James Securities, Paul Morris, expressed optimism for the project, highlighting the upcoming topping-out ceremony to celebrate the completion of the arena in the autumn.
