The University of Sunderland is hosting an event called “Get into Social Work” and “Community and Youth Work” to provide exclusive opportunities for individuals to explore dynamic career paths in social work and its closely aligned profession in community and youth work.
Sheryl Johnson, a former apprentice, studied an Integrated Degree Apprenticeship in Social Work at the University of Sunderland, a program that proved to be life-changing, not only for her but also for the community she now serves. Despite strong A-level grades and aspirations of becoming a doctor, Sheryl decided to earn money and opted to work for Durham County Council as a social work assistant.
By 2013, she had moved up the ranks and became a reviewing officer in Darlington. Her work proved to be closely aligned with that of a fully trained social worker, and her manager put her forward for the Integrated Degree Apprenticeship in Social Work at the University of Sunderland, where she could achieve the necessary qualifications.
After three years of juggling full-time work with study and managing various health complications, Sheryl graduated with a First-Class degree in 2022. As a result of her University placement, she landed a full-time job as a social worker for the Looked After Children team with Darlington Borough Council. Sheryl believes that apprenticeships are crucial in developing skilled social workers.
Sheryl’s advice to anyone thinking of studying a Social Work Apprenticeship is to be committed not only to doing the job but also to coming home and working on assignments. She believes that it is three years of hard work but definitely worth the effort as it not only gives individuals a qualification to practice as a social worker but also makes them better people and opens many doors for which they will be forever grateful.
