Urbo (West Bar) Ltd has released new visuals showcasing the £300m West Bar development in Sheffield city centre, providing a virtual fly-through of the development. The visuals include new business and residential accommodation, extensive public realm, and the scheme’s interaction with the surrounding area. The West Bar development will comprise up to one million sq ft of new space within the West Bar business area, offering high-quality retail and leisure spaces in West Bar Square. The first phase of construction of three towers at West Bar is almost complete, which will offer the biggest floorplates in the city and significant environmental, social, and governance credentials. The entire scheme includes up to 8,000 new jobs, hundreds of apartments, public spaces, and over 500,000 sq ft of office accommodation. The development is funded by Legal & General, and after 20 years of planning, it represents the largest single city centre investment deal Sheffield has ever seen.
According to Peter Swallow at Urbo (West Bar) Ltd, the development represents an excellent example of the best practice approach to area-wide urban regeneration, involving years of negotiating with landowners and tenants over 100 separate property titles within the development boundary, and offering alternative improved premises to occupiers without any job losses. The scheme is commercially viable and deliverable despite the difficult economic headwinds. This project’s scope and complexity were achieved through public and private sector collaboration, with delivery partners, including Sheffield City Council, principal contractor Bowmer + Kirkland, 5plus Architects, and Asteer Planning. The West Bar development will be a gamechanger for Sheffield’s economy and the surrounding neighborhoods.
