A new fund worth £1.35m has been launched to provide support for community projects in the north and west regions of Newcastle. The Local Community Partnership grant scheme, led by the North of Tyne Combined Authority and funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, aims to strengthen relationships, foster vibrant communities, create opportunities for residents, and address local issues. The programme will be managed by the Newcastle City Council.
Cllr Alex Hay, cabinet member for a Thriving City at the Newcastle City Council, expressed enthusiasm and said that this initiative is a wonderful opportunity for community projects in the north and west areas of the city to receive the necessary funding they need to bring people together and mitigate some of the most pressing concerns faced by residents. The primary objective is to provide safe spaces for socialising, reduce anti-social behaviour, resolve issues around isolation among older residents, and restore and enhance community buildings. The council is committed to creating healthy and inclusive neighbourhoods that can foster growth, and Cllr Alex Hay is looking forward to observing the impact of this funding.
The steering group for the programme, made up of 20 volunteers from local organisations, residents and community groups, will determine funding awards. The team aims to encourage local community groups from the target areas to submit their expressions of interest as quickly as possible. Alexandra Johnson, the steering group’s chair, emphasised the importance of activities that encourage people to volunteer in their respective communities. Local organisations may either maintain or expand current activities, engage with new audiences or even try new methods, and should not hesitate to get in touch with the steering group.
With £950k reserved for revenue projects requiring an element of volunteering and £400k for capital projects aimed at providing superior spaces for the local community to participate in events, the fund is open to projects in Blakelaw, Brunswick Village, Cowgate, Fawdon, part of Fenham, Havannah Park, Kenton, Lemington, Newbiggin Hall, Newburn Riverside, Oakwood Grange, Slatyford, Throckley and West Denton.
