The government has released new guidance to support businesses in upskilling their workforce and leveraging the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to boost productivity. The guidance aims to develop employee understanding of key knowledge, skills, and behaviors needed to safely use emerging AI technologies, including tools like Large Language Models. There will be a focus on five specific areas, helping workers to solve workplace problems, evaluate project performance, and handle day-to-day roles such as admin and accounting. Developed in partnership with the Innovate UK BridgeAI programme and The Alan Turning Institute, this guidance will empower businesses to equip their workforce with the necessary skills to harness the power of AI.
According to Suid Adeyanju, CEO of RiverSafe, the UK needs to prepare itself for the rising tide of AI-enabled cyber threats. While upskilling the workforce to adapt and embrace AI is a step in the right direction, much more needs to be done to train companies on cybersecurity to prevent harmful repercussions. Andrew Drylie, an investment manager at Quadri Ventures, adds that widespread adoption of AI will significantly alter the business landscape. Thus, it is prudent for the government to encourage upskilling opportunities to stay ahead of the curve. Tom Dunning, CEO and founder of Ad Signal, notes that embracing AI will bring both opportunities and challenges. Businesses must therefore upskill their workforce to ensure ethical, responsible, and environmentally sustainable use of AI.
Viscount Camrose, the Minister for AI, states that upskilling the workforce to use AI is vital for the UK to become an AI powerhouse. This guidance will be invaluable in helping UK businesses engage in practical and successful steps towards achieving this aim. It encourages businesses to embrace AI, develop their employees’ skills and knowledge and leverage the innovative technology to drive growth and productivity.
