Sheffield Forgemasters has successfully completed a rigorous audit to regain its ASME status, positioning the company to expand into nuclear fabrication. The audit, conducted by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, recommended the company for Material Organisation and welding accreditations, paving the way for Sheffield Forgemasters to become the sole UK producer capable of physically weld-fabricating safety critical components for nuclear power plants.
Ian Nicholls, group technical director, emphasized the significance of the accreditation, stating, “The accreditation is a huge development with enhanced requirements and disciplines embracing all our processes, employees and selected sub-suppliers.”
Once approved by the ASME CNC committee, Sheffield Forgemasters will be able to supply castings and forgings for civil nuclear applications and carry out weld construction activities on these materials through ASME NPT Certification. This accreditation holds significant opportunities for the UK’s nuclear new-build programme, addressing the growing need for nuclear power to combat the global energy crisis.
Furthermore, Sheffield Forgemasters plans to continue its work in developing manufacturing technologies for the next generation of SMR civil nuclear power plants.
