RWE recently welcomed local MPs, Lia Nici and Martin Vickers, to their new Grimsby Hub, an advanced operations and maintenance facility currently being constructed at their existing site in Grimsby’s Royal Docks. During the visit, the MPs had the opportunity to tour the facility, meet with staff, and learn about RWE’s planned investment in the region.
RWE is responsible for operating the Humber Gateway and Triton Knoll offshore wind farms from the Grimsby Docks, as well as the construction of the Sofia offshore wind farm and the development of two additional offshore wind farms on Dogger Bank in the North Sea. Once fully operational, the Grimsby Hub will serve as the operations base for Triton Knoll and Sofia, as well as housing RWE’s Centralised Control Room (CCR), where technicians will oversee the operation of the majority of the company’s UK offshore portfolio. This further solidifies the Humber’s leading role in the UK’s offshore wind sector.
Hobson & Porter, a firm based in the Humber region, is responsible for constructing the multi-million pound facility, which is expected to accommodate approximately 140 RWE employees. The Grimsby Hub has the potential to bring around 70 new skilled jobs to the region, as well as indirect jobs in support roles. Recruitment for the Sofia offshore wind farm is already underway, with over 20 technician positions currently open.
The choice of location for the Grimsby Hub at the Royal Docks was based on its proximity to existing and future projects, as well as its deep-water quayside, which is suitable for the use of Service Operations Vessels (SOVs). Construction is set to be completed next year and will include a joint control room for 24/7 monitoring of multiple sites, shared office space, and separate warehouse facilities.
Guy Middleton, RWE’s general manager for the Grimsby Hub, hosted the visit and expressed his enthusiasm for discussing RWE’s investment plans and the opportunities they will provide for skilled roles and the regional supply chain. Corinne Barry, RWE’s newly appointed director for Net Zero East Coast UK, also expressed excitement for RWE’s future plans in the Humber region and their contribution to the country’s net zero ambitions.
