A diverse delegation from North East England will soon be heading to Barcelona for the Smart City Expo World Congress, where they will showcase the region’s impressive smart city credentials to attendees from around the world. The conference, which takes place from November 7-9, attracts more than 20,000 people and is the largest of its type in the world. Among those attending will be representatives from Invest Newcastle, Newcastle City Council, Sunderland City Council and several private sector organisations.
Newcastle and Sunderland are two of the UK’s most advanced cities when it comes to digital transformation, with both having implemented a range of wireless technologies and smart infrastructure to benefit residents and businesses. Newcastle is one of only five UK cities to be ranked in IMD’s Global Smart City Observatory and is continuing to invest in wireless infrastructure, urban monitoring and data science to better understand urban engagement.
Sunderland has also made significant progress in its digital transformation and is one of just six cities worldwide nominated for the prestigious City Award at the upcoming World Smart City Awards, which will be announced at the Smart City Expo in Barcelona. Boldyn Networks is one of Sunderland’s long-term partners and is using 5G and IoT networks to create one of the UK’s most technologically advanced smart environments.
Dawn Dunn, Digital and Tech Sector Lead at Invest Newcastle, said: “We are really excited to showcase our digital expertise on the global stage and demonstrate the incredible potential for urban innovation in North East England. Working with colleagues in Sunderland, we aim to show how our region is embracing the data-driven digital revolution.”
The event provides an opportunity to discuss innovative city strategies, share groundbreaking projects and ideas, and enable smarter futures. The delegation from North East England is looking forward to sharing their smart city transformations and demonstrating the region’s commitment to urban innovation.
