Newcastle University and RWE’s Sofia Offshore Wind Farm have established a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to collaborate in supporting the growth of a skilled offshore wind workforce, expanding the sector, and driving innovation. The 1.4 gigawatt (GW) Sofia, which is currently under construction, is located on a 593km2 site 195 kilometers from the North East coast on Dogger Bank in the North Sea. With key facilities in Teesside, Blyth, and Grimsby, it is crucial to have a local skilled workforce throughout the lifecycle of the project.
In line with its commitment to meeting the region’s needs, Newcastle University actively engages with local businesses to foster innovation and skills. The MOU, signed at Newcastle University’s Marine Station at the Port of Blyth on August 10th, 2023, strengthens the existing collaboration between the two partners. This collaboration has included student dissertations, grid-related workshops, support for STEM career awareness events, guest lectures, and seminars within Newcastle University programs.
Kim Gauld-Clark, Sofia’s senior consents manager, expressed their satisfaction in formalizing the collaboration with Newcastle University and their eagerness to continue working together on various student-focused initiatives. These initiatives will provide valuable experience and insights into the expanding offshore wind sector, opening up numerous career paths.
Professor Stephanie Glendinning, pro-vice-chancellor, Faculty of Science, Agriculture & Engineering at Newcastle University, highlighted the partnership’s importance in bridging academia and industry for mutual benefit. She emphasized that the collaboration with Sofia Offshore Wind Farm Limited will equip students with essential skills, promote sustainable careers, and contribute to the economic prosperity of the region. Additionally, this collaboration underscores Newcastle University’s commitment to being a leader in the development of clean and affordable energy.
