One of Derby’s most experienced criminal lawyers is set to continue representing people in court as he takes on a new position at East Midlands law firm Smith Partnership. Andy Cash, with over 42 years of industry experience and renowned within Derby’s legal circles, has joined the firm’s crime department as a solicitor. This marks the latest milestone in his career, which began in Devon in 1979 and later brought him to Derby in 1986 after a brief stint in Hong Kong. Andy joined city firm Eddowes Waldron and eventually became a partner before transitioning to fellow city firm Nelsons ten years later. Prior to his current role at Smith Partnership, Andy served as a director at Derby law firm Cartwright King.
Smith Partnership, with its headquarters in Friar Gate and six offices across the East Midlands, offers a comprehensive range of legal services. Its unique capability lies in providing criminal law and criminal defense alongside private work such as family law, wills and probate, and corporate law services including commercial property, dispute resolution, and debt recovery. It is this all-round capability that piqued Andy’s interest in his new role, as he can continue representing clients in court and criminal proceedings at police stations.
“I’ve always had a passion for representing people in court and as a duty solicitor at the police station,” Andy expressed. “Clients often require someone to clarify their position during criminal investigations, even if they initially believe they don’t need legal representation. This can have a significant impact, and I look forward to continuing this important work, as well as assisting clients facing motoring offenses. Additionally, I’m excited to work for a full-service firm where I can refer clients to other experts for their various legal needs.”
Andrew Oldroyd, partner at Smith Partnership and head of the crime department in the Derby office, warmly welcomes Andy to the team. “Andy brings extensive experience and a stellar local reputation, so we’re thrilled to have him join Smith Partnership,” Andrew stated. “I recall how helpful Andy was when I was a newly qualified lawyer, and his presence in the Derby law sector is widely recognized. With his arrival, he can mentor our younger lawyers in the department, ensuring that we continue to deliver exceptional criminal law services.”
