A growing number of higher education institutions, including the University of Liverpool and University of West England, are turning to Yorkshire-based BioScapes® for sustainable grounds management and biodiversity support. As part of its ongoing “Sowing the Seeds of Sustainability” initiative, the University of Liverpool has installed five NatureArk® and five WildPod® units around campus to promote biodiversity and encourage staff and student engagement and wellbeing. The University of West England has also installed BioScapes WildPods in its community garden to complement its existing edible planting scheme.
BioScapes, part of the Rolawn® group, has seen increased demand for its self-contained wildlife planters across UK educational sites as institutions look for ways to support sustainability goals and boost biodiversity. The planters, designed and built in Seaton Ross near Pocklington by a collaboration between ecologists and horticulture specialists, contain multiple integrated habitats that allow wildlife to thrive. With the UK facing dwindling native species populations, BioScapes’ Terry Smithson sees the growing trend of universities seeking to enhance the natural environment as encouraging: “Doing more for biodiversity on campus is a win-win for wildlife, staff, and students.”
The University of Liverpool’s Professor Charlotte Hardman says the initiative offers a great opportunity for staff and students to get involved, experience campus gardens, and meet new people. The University of West England’s grounds manager Richie Fluester sees BioScapes planters as helping towards maximizing biodiversity and creating beautiful spaces for leisure, study, and practical experience. UWE plans to install more units once the first installation is established.
As BioScapes’ unique, patented planters enable site-specific needs and provide a net gain in biodiversity, educational institutions and many other businesses searching for innovative ways to support sustainability and enhance the natural environment can utilize BioScapes solutions to enhance their ecological footprint.
